About Museu d´Art Espanyol Contemporani

The Museu d’Art Espanyol Contemporani in Palma de Mallorca has on view a permanent collection of seventy works by fifty-two artists distributed over sixteen galleries. The collection begins with Head of a Woman of 1907 by Pablo Picasso, one of a series of studies for the Demoiselles d’Avignon of that same year. The most recent is a ceramic work by Miquel Barceló, Grand pot avec cranes sur 1 face, created by the Mallorcan artist in 2000. In addition to Picasso, there are works by Juan Gris, Julio González, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí.

The catalogue of the Museum provides commentaries on the works exhibited and their artists, with an introduction to the collection, artistic movements, and the distinct generations represented within them. These works principally come from the collection begun in 1973 by the Fundación Juan March, which has promoted and directed this center since 1990.

The Museum also features regular temporary exhibitions and has implemented an educational initiative aimed at school children, college students, families and other groups.

During the season from September to June the Museum conducts classes on art and presents lectures on temporary exhibitions and the permanent collection. It also organizes, fortnightly, "Recitals for Young People" for students from schools and other educational centers in Mallorca, who attend with their teachers upon prior arrangement with the Museum. The concerts are accompanied by a didactic discussion with a music critic.
