From the moment we arrived at Restaurante Jens in Camp de Mar and were met by Manuela, to the moment we were wished goodnight by Jens himself, our evening was a delight. Manuela Aichinger is the sommelier and commands front of house, while Jens Krumbiegel creates the works of gastronomic art that grace the menu.

We made our selections from the à la carte menu but Jens also features a five course set menu if you prefer. My partner began with a salteado of gamba, calamari, mango and tamarind, while my choice was carpaccio of salmon and scallop. The carpaccio was a wonderfully light dish with subtle touches of coriander and sesame, while the salteado was initially powerful, but with a whole range of subtle flavours coming through.

For mains we chose the fillet of sole with peanut couscous, and rack of lamb with chorizo and bean purée. The lamb was cooked exactly as ordered and was set off to perfection by the dark, complex jus and the flavours in the purée. All my partner could say about the sole dish was “Wow”!

Being a little full by now, we settled for a shared sweet from the set menu and ended up almost fighting over it! Coffee accompanied by a chocolate pot ended a meal of very high standard, which was maintained for every course. We must mention again the sheer artistic beauty of each dish also – a joy to the eye and the palate as well.

The attention to detail at Restaurante Jens is second to none and the evening was enhanced by each seemingly small new discovery and treat. Taking into account the high standards of service and cuisine and the sheer enjoyment of the evening, this restaurant delivers true value. We were amazed to find that it was opening night after being closed for some weeks for holidays and alterations. If this is what Manuela and Jens can do from a standing start, then 2008 will surely be their best season yet!
